Eating disorders are more common in some schools than others – but why?
New research has found that young women with eating disorders are more likely to go to schools with more girls, and with more highly educated parents. Research author Helen Bould explores why this might be Diagnosed eating disorders are more common in some schools than others: schools with greater proportions of female students, and schools with higher numbers of children with university-educated parents. These were the headline results of our study, published last week in the International Journal of Epidemiology (open access). Eating disorders are serious illnesses (someone with bulimia nervosa is around twice as likely to die young as someone without it; someone with anorexia nervosa about six times more likely), so this might make us worry about the effect of all-girls private or …

The myth about overeating that hurts you
The Myth About Overeating That Hurts You When you’re stuck in the patterns of overeating and the emotional pain that goes with it, it may be hard to believe that there’s a solution. In my opinion, you do not have a weight problem. You don’t have an eating problem. Calling things by their wrong names means the solutions and strategies aren’t gonna help. They’re trying to fix the wrong thing. No wonder everyone is struggling and the diet industry keeps getting richer. I haven’t been writing much about eating issues or offering related programs lately. But because many of you are struggling and wanting more support, I want to help. I know just how painful the body wars are and have …
White Models in Asian Ads
Over at highsnobiety: “The reason why Asian brands would want to use foreign models is that there’s pressure to compete with foreign brands. They want to minimize their visual gap and solidify their positioning,” says Taeil Park, former Fashion Editor at GQ Korea. “It’s less about how ‘better-looking’ foreign models may be than Asian models. It’s more about competing with these foreign brands, and wanting to be seen as the same kind of quality brand.” Labels representative of this type are Wooyoungmi, Juun.J, and O’2nd, who sell to Western doors like Barneys, Bergdorf Goodman, and Saks Fifth Avenue. In such stores, they are physically merchandized alongside DKNY, Maje, Opening Ceremony, Vivienne Westwood, Lanvin, Calvin Klein, Ami Paris…And their models are? Mostly white….
No, we can’t

Fitness at Every Size
Did you hear about The University of Washington’s advice for prospective cheerleaders? The infographic, published last week by the university, suggested that coeds show up for tryouts with “curled or straight hair,” false eyelashes, and bare midriffs – and created quite a stir in the body image community. It’s clear that the university – and likely not the only one but maybe one of the only to advertise – was looking for a female prototype to populate its squad. Might women of color have a shot? Would women of diverse body types or varying degrees of femininity have any chance of nailing an audition? Unlikely. While we might take aim at any one of the stereotypically confining pointers they recommend, the one that jumps out most to me is …
Praying for Death
“I went to mass twice this week, praying for God to heal one and to take another.” The words of my father-in-law pierced through heart. Gary is a man of quiet faith, but certainly not quiet in nature. His bold personality can light up a […]
Tackling stigma will help challenge the power of eating disorders
Most people with eating disorders are amazing liars. Not something to put on the CV and not something many of us would say we are proud of, rather a skill we have developed and honed over the years to protect ourselves and others from knowing the truth about our illness. Eating disorders can start at any age. You could be a 7-year old girl, as I was, hiding my packed lunches, a 15-year old boy, over-exercising in secret, a young parent cooking for kids but not feeding themselves, or an older person – I was in hospital with a 68 year old bulimic – they struggle too. Whatever age and whatever the circumstance, we have one thing in common and that is that we’ll all have had times when…
