Creating Personal Space

Freedom space

Creating Personal Space

Recently I have come to realize that normal online activity leaves many individuals overextended (spiritually, socially, energetically) this includes myself.

If you find you are a little more stressed than usual or that you do not have as much freedom and ease as usual (or as you would like), it may be time to create some space for yourself, both online and off.

For an example, today I clicked “Leave Group” on two Facebook groups I had recently joined. I had grown accustomed to reading the posts and comments in these groups and for a while enjoyed some interaction with other group members. With the groups growing rapidly (one to over 3,000 members) the enjoyment soon turned into frustration and I sometimes felt overwhelmed trying to keep up with the threads and people I came to know.

By measuring the work/fun ratio I decided to leave these two particular groups and concentrate on my other groups that still leave me feeling inspired or refreshed and create more space for myself.

Having space in life is like having the ability to exhale. We need space as much as we need to breathe.

Overindulging in action and doing can leave us feeling tense, short tempered, contracted, tired, unable to sleep well, and generally off balance.

Creating Space Ideas:

  • Set time for a 10 minute meditation both am and pm (simply watching the breath and returning to the breath when you notice your mind has wandered).
  •  Pausing when the urge to socialize online appears. Online distractions can be very slippery.
  • While outside for a walk or drive, be in silence, give your mind space to know the wonder of your surroundings.
  • Remember, when asked to attend an activity, pause and consider the cost to your well-being and that of those closest to you. Make a conscious decision rather than submit “yes” as your default response.
  • Make idle waiting time (in lines, in traffic, for appointments, on hold on the phone) sacred. Recite a mantra, a sacred word, prayer or uplifting thought while you wait.
  • Eliminate distractions while creating.
  • Be in your body with awareness. Use all of your senses as you go about your day.
  • Listen well and slow down your responses.

Start by feeling what resonates with you and what might feel really good in your own life. Savor each moment you gain by being present fully in your life. Enjoy!
