Darkness and Light-Solstice Rituals

Darkness and light are very much on my mind this week.

I long for the light and count the days towards the winter solstice two weeks from today with a sense of hope trusting the light will return. I love the symbolism of moving toward and into the light. Of actively welcoming the light.

And we need more light right now. Oh God how we need it, need to create more of it, need to embody and share it in as many ways as we are able.

The world has been so very dark.

I wanted a ritual for the next 14 days to conjure and celebrate light. I created a small altar to the light for this. It’s a bunch of votives and candles with some other sacred objects that I love. Simple yet even small rituals shift the energy in and around us.

At sundown, I’ll light the candles and animate my intention to bear light as I move through the days. To choose in any given moment to respond from light and love instead of darkness and fear.

I have a client, a talented artist, whom I love and admire. He told me a story about being at a party recently, all dressed up, feeling happy and free, when an acquaintance of his basically insulted him and his outfit- unprovoked.

And in the moment, feeling vulnerable and unfairly attacked, he responded from a very new place. He responded from his knowing and clarity that he was here to be love. Not to try to change people, or preach anything, but simply to hold an intention of love and not take on the crap of anyone or anything around him.

In telling me about the incident, his whole face was illuminated. He was radiant in a way that comes from living from your deepest core values and beliefs. He was only interested in being love. He knew that the other guy’s remarks came from his own woundedness but didn’t take it on. He held the light and filled himself up with it until it emanated from his words and actions.

I just loved hearing that. Loved seeing him embody that intention to anchor himself in light, in love.

I want that for me, and for you if you choose.

I’m in the midst of celebrating Hannukah, an 8-night festival of lights. I love the small traditions that I carry from my childhood. I still light the candles and say the prayer in Hebrew, as I was taught. As I did with my husband and my children. As I did with my own parents and extended family. I have the same menorah from my childhood and it is truly precious to me.

I am also lighting the candles on my altar and will continue to do this through the 21st. We can be light-bearers, we can bring more love wherever we go in any given moment. This makes a difference and anyone can do it.

Tis truly the season.

With love and light to you from me….
